- Alley Pond Environmental Center.
"This magnificent park is our legacy — passed to us by our ancestors and
held in trust for all who follow. Over 635 acres of woodlands, meadows
fresh and salt water marshes encompass this northeast Queens park. It is
truly a haven for NYC's wildlife and a peaceful refuge for its human
residents. For centuries people have been drawn to "the Alley" for its
richness and diversity. The Native American Mattinicock people flourished
by harvesting its bounty of food sources. During colonial times pioneers
carved farms out of the wilderness. A post office, blacksmith shop, grist
mill and Buhrmann's General Store were historical sites located in the
Park. In the 20th century, highway growth and development threatened these
ecosystems. Beginning in the 1960's many noble efforts were made to
preserve what remains of our natural heritage. In the past twenty years
people have become aware of the parks true value and have rallied to its
support."

- Flushing Meadows
Corona Park. "Flushing Meadow Corona Park is one of the greatest
places in New York City. It has become the keystone park of Queens and a
recreation and cultural hub for the region; yet, it was once just a dusty
wasteland, "a valley of ashes" as F. Scott Fitzgerald dubbed it in the
Great Gatsby. Its poetic, phoenix-like transformation from ash dump to
oasis was driven by Queens' residents, the City and 1939 and 1965 World's
Fair held in this park. These fairs put this park on the world's stage,
and it has stayed there, hosting the United Nations General Assembly for
five years, three baseball World Seres at Shea Stadium, and the U.S. Open.
More than a fairground and a site of major athletic competitions, this
park is used every day by people from the entire region. People come to
play soccer on the new turf fields, to stroll along the Flushing Bay
promenade, to enjoy the sounds of a summer concert, to visit one of the
park's outstanding cultural institutions, or simply to relax in a
beautiful garden. Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and Parks & Recreation are
committed to Flushing Meadows Corona Park. We look forward to developing
new recreation facilities, enhancing the collection of great public art,
and continuing its maintenance and its growth as a terrific place for all
New Yorkers."

concerts and educational programs about his life, and operating his home
as a historic house museum.
- Queens Zoo.
"The Queens Zoo, a tribute to American animals, opened to the public on
June 25, 1992. It was the second of three "city zoos" to be renovated and
operated by Wildlife Conservation Society, through a partnership with the
New York City Department of Parks and Recreation.
Unlike the much older Central Park and Prospect Park zoos (which were
renovated and reopened by WCS in 1988 and 1993, respectively), the Queens
Zoo had only existed since 1968. That year, the "Flushing Meadows Zoo"
opened on the grounds of the 1964 World's Fair. However, advances in zoo
technology and animal management rapidly left the zoo in need of an
update. The new zoo is the result of a $16 million reconstruction."
